Consulting
My consulting
experience in the commercial publishing industry includes:
- Writing the articles:
Calculus, Integral Calculus, Differential Calculus, Number Theory, and Numerical
Analysis, totaling 8000 words, for the Academic American Encyclopedia (pub.
Grollier, Inc.)
- Assembling a group
of five historians of mathematics who wrote various sections of the entry
"History of Mathematics in Encyclopaedia
Britannica (Macropaedia), 1986.In addition I wrote the section "Arabic
Mathematics" for that entry
- I reviewed the mathematics
database of the 1986 edition of the Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedia and writing
the articles "Calculus", "Vectors", Trigonometry",
"Sequences and Series", and "Mathematics (History)"
( now incorporated into Encarta)
- Serving as member of
the International Board of Consulting Editors for Encyclopaedia
Britannica from its formation in the early 1990s to its dissolution
in the late 1990s
- From January 1999 to
February 2001, reviewing the Encyclopaedia
Britannica's entire mathematics data base. My duties were to recommend
necessary revisions as well as suitable specialists to write the revised
articles. I often worked intensively with the writers in planning or revising
their pieces. I also wrote a number of the shorter pieces myself.
- Most recently I have
done some consulting and writing for McGraw-Hill Science.
