Math 251 Lecture 20: Wednesday, October 27th 1999.

Today we talked about Max-Min Problems in 2 Variables. After defining a local maximum and a local minimum, we concentrated on how to find them.

First, one must find critical points. Three different types of critical points were defined (types 1, 2 and 3), in terms of partial derivatives being either zero or undefined. These concepts were illustrated by various Maple Examples.

Classification of type 3 critical points into local max, local min, and saddle points, can be done using the second derivatives test.
