Math 314 Lecture 24: Wednesday, November 3rd 1999.
Today we continued discussing the Wave Equation. We looked at the
Fourier series solution to the example presented on Monday and found that
it could be simply written in terms of left-moving and right-moving waves.
These waves were merely periodic extensions of the initial condition, thus
eliminating the need to evaluate the Fourier series!
The example under consideration was then animated in
Maple.
This procedure (of finding left and right moving waves, thereby avoiding a
Fourier series) was shown to generalize to what is called D'Alembert's
Solution.
