Our final exam is scheduled for Tu 15 Apr, 3:30 - 6:00pm (2.5 hours)
in RCB 8100, and will account for 50% of the grade, or more
if you do better on the final than on a midterm (in which case
the final will be used instead).
One 8.5x11" formula sheet of your own is allowed (both sides OK).
For the final, we'll adhere to the principles in the following notes
adapted from the Senate Committee on Academic Integrity. Please understand
that the goal of these procedures is to protect the majority of students
who are honest and committed to their studies by maintaining
the continued integrity of their SFU degrees. The Department of Statistics and
Actuarial Science and SFU have a zero tolerance policy on cheating.
Principles for Maintaining Academic Integrity during SFU Examinations
- Before and After
- Do not allow cell-phones, blackberries, iPods, laptops, etc. on desks or
in the vicinity of desks. No devices should be allowed through which
information from outside the exam room could be received. Advise those
who want to keep track of time to wear a wrist-watch.
- Do not allow clothing and bags around desks or hung on
backs of chairs. Instead, personal items should be stowed at the front of
the room where they are reasonably safe and cannot be accessed until after
the exam. Tell students before-hand not to bring valuables to the exam
(other than their personal genius) and that SFU takes no responsibility
for lost or stolen items.
- Carefully inspect anything placed on desks: water bottles (especially
backs of labels), pencil cases, spectacle cases, lucky charms, etc.
- Make sure there are empty seats between students sitting the exam.
- Examine calculators before use to ensure their only function is calculation.
- Mark exam booklets in some way, prior to distribution.
- Collect all unused exam booklets and question sheets at the end
with careful accounting for each student. There should be one
booklet per student; if a student asks for more during the exam make a note
of it and check that he/she hands them all in.
- Running the exam
- Check student ID before the exam begins and look for (and challenge)
unfamiliar faces. Impersonation in an exam is a criminal offence.
- Invigilate the exam from the back of the room, not the front. Be
especially concerned about the middle of the room as opposed to the edges
and alongside walkways.
- Patrol the room at unpredictable moments using unpredictable routes.
Be vigilant; do not spend the exam time reading or grading.
- Regulate washroom use carefully. After the exam begins someone should
inspect the nearest washrooms (male and female) and scan them for
hidden items. Once a washroom has been cleared this is the only facility
that should be used. Check the washrooms periodically.
