In this talk we shall examine aspects of gravity driven flows over topography. Hyperpycnal plumes which are particle-bearing as well as radially spreading flows over porous surfaces will be discussed.Particular attention will be payed to aspects of hyperbolicity of the governing equations as well as invariant sets associated with the given Cauchy problem. These invariant sets may be related to a stability Froude number.Comparisons with experiments and numerical results will be included.
