Social Events
|
There are three main social events planned for the SSC/WNAR/IMS meeting:
-
On Sunday June 10, an evening mixer will be held at the Diamond University
Club at Simon Fraser University. This is a non-fee event, welcome to
all participants. At the same time and venue,
the Poster Session and Registration will take place.
-
On the evening of Tuesday June 12, the conference banquet will
take place at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Coaches have been
arranged to take participants to and from the Hyatt. This is a non-fee
event for all registered participants and extra tickets can be ordered
in advance at $50/ticket (see the registration form). A four-course
dinner will be served and a cash-bar will be provided.
Vegetarian dinners may be ordered in advance.
-
On the evening of Wednesday June 13, a trip has been planned to
Grouse Mountain. The trip includes coach transportation to and
from Grouse Mountain, a gondola lift and
a salmon barbeque. While at Grouse Mountain,
participants may hike, watch the free
Theatre in the Sky production and visit the gift shop.
More adventurous and fit participants may consider
avoiding the gondola and doing the "Grouse Grind"; a steep 1.5
hour ascent on a well marked trail. Grouse Mountain is 1000
metres above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Lower
Mainland. The cost for this event is $50 and tickets can be
purchased by indicating your intent on the registration form.
More information on Grouse Mountain is available from the
Grouse Mountain webpage.
Would you like to show friends back home a picture of yourself
confidently climbing a sheer granite cliff? Rick Routledge,
a faculty member in Statistics at SFU, plans to organize a
rock climbing outing for meeting participants. The outing
will be in Squamish, the world-famous climbing destination
just a short drive north of Vancouver. He has tentatively
engaged the services of an excellent husband/wife team of
local climbing instructors. They'll get novices safely to the
top of that cliff, and help more experienced climbers to hone
their skills. They'll make it fun too. For more information,
or to reserve one of the limited number of spaces, contact
Rick at
routledg@stat.sfu.ca.
