Prerequisites:
MATH 252 or (MATH 253) and MATH 310.
Textbook:
Boundary Value Problems, 4th Edition,
by D. L. Powers, publisher Holt, Rhinehart, Winston.
Calendar Description:
Separation of variables for the conduction equation, the wave equations
and Laplace's equation.
Sturm-Liouville problems. Separation in polar co-ordinates. Laplace transforms.
Outline:
Note: This outline may be subject to change as the semester
progresses, but you can take it to be at least 80% accurate.
- Chapter 0: A Review of Ordinary Differential Equations -- 3 lectures (Sept.
8th - 13th).
- Chapter 1: Fourier Series and Integrals -- 7 lectures (Sept. 15th - 29th).
- Chapter 2: The Heat Equation -- 8 lectures (Oct. 1st - 20th).
- Mid-Term Exam -- Take-Home Exam handed-out in class on Wednesday Oct. 20th.
Due in class on Monday Oct. 25th.
- Chapter 3: The Wave Equation -- 4 lectures (Oct. 22nd - 29th).
- Chapter 4: The Potential Equation -- 3 lectures (Nov. 1st - 5th).
- Chapter 5: Problems in Several Dimensions -- 8 lectures (Nov. 8th - 24th).
- Chapter 6: Laplace Transform -- 4 lectures (Nov. 26th - Dec. 3rd).
- Final Exam -- 3:30 PM Monday, December 13th 1999. Three-hour closed-book
exam. No calculators. Location t.b.a.
Lecture Notes:
A summary of each lecture will be posted on the Class Web Site, along
with scanned-in colour transparancies which were used in the lectures.
Homework Assignments:
Problems will be given during each lecture, in order to help
you understand the concepts covered in each class. The problem
sets will be due weekly at the beginning of each Wednesday's class.
The homework assignments will also be posted on the Class Web Site,
along with solutions (after the assignment is due).
Grading:
Midterm - 30%
Assignments - 30%
Final Exam - 40%

Students should be aware that they have certain rights to confidentiality
concerning the return of course papers and the posting of marks.
